In 1957, Disneyland’s first “House of the Future” (photo) was built. It was a vision of the home of 1985 and had the following as its featured gadgets:
- Plastic chairs and walls
- Handsfree telephone
- Wall-sized TV
- Microwave oven
- Ultrasonic dishwasher
- Electric razor and toothbrush
- Intercoms with mini-TV screens
- Sinks that adjusted for each user’s height
The bad news is that this attraction is no longer available, but the good news is that there is going to be a NEW “House of the Future” at Disneyland.
Scheduled to open in May in Tomorrowland, the gadget-filled “smart” home was built with in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard Co., software maker LifeWare and homebuilder Taylor Morrison. Among the features that will be showcased are:
* lights that are dimmed and shades that are drawn automatically when a TV remote is clicked, to simulate a movie environment.
* touchpad software on kitchen countertops that identify groceries, produce recipes and meal suggestions.
* mirrors and closets that can identify clothes and suggest matching outfits, complimentary colors or track what apparel is at the cleaners or in the wash.
