Duncan Hines Decadent Carrot Cake Review

If I’m going to have carrot cake then I want the real deal.  The problem is, it’s a bit time consuming and expensive to make.  You have to stand there and grate all those carrots and such.  It’s worth the effort for a special treat, but sometimes you just wish there was shortcut.

While I was visiting my parents this week, I saw that my mom had one of the Duncan Hines Decadent Carrot Cake mixes in the pantry and I decided to give it a shot.  There are actual raisins and shredded carrots in the package.  You simply soak them in water for about 5 minutes to soften them up and then you add them to your cake batter.

In my opinion, the cake was easy to make and it was great that it came with real raisins and carrots. The cake was dense and moist and had a nice spice taste.  It certainly wasn’t as good as homemade carrot cake, but was better than the other carrot mixes because this one had texture to it.  I would use the cake for everyday uses, but probably not if I were having guests.

For a short time, you can try the Dunkin Hines Decadent Carrot Cake for free with this rebate form.  I am not sure if this is for everyone or just for those that don’t like it.  It might be worth a shot.  Simply fill it out and send it in by April 30, 2009.

Have you tried this cake?  What are your thoughts?

That’s so funny you would write about that cake mix. I found it marked down at Target today and bought one. My husband loves carrot cake, so I thought I would give it a try. It certainly beats shredding my knuckles while shredding the carrots. Thanks for the rebate form.

    • Anita: How much did you pay for the cake mix? Just curious. Some people say they don’t like the taste of the carrots in the mix, but I thought they were fine.

I know what you mean about shredding carrots. That is the worst part about making a carrot cake. I have a wonderful carrot cake recipe. I’ll have to bake it sometime, take some pics, and share the recipe with you all.

      Thanks for commenting.

My wife made this cake a week ago. It was gone within two days – a cake normally lasts five days in this household. It was wonderful – better than most Bakery/Restaurant carrot cake. I bought another mix and prepared it myself at midnight last night. It’s been in the fridge about 14 hours, so it should be just right this evening. So easy – didn’t even need the mixer. Go Duncan Hines!

I have always have good luck with Duncan Hines cake mixes but was terribly disappointed with this one. Mine had a pungent flavor and it DID NOT RISE!!! My other ingredients for the cake were fine and I followed the directions to the letter. I only added the water that the raisins and carrots soaked in as directed, so I know it wasn’t that. I’m sure that this was just a glitch in the mix but I was highly disappointed in Duncan Hines.

Did anyone else’s cake taste bad and not rise? Or am I the only one?
