Extreme Makeover: Home Edition – Demolition Day

By the end of third day of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the Nickless family’s home has been reduced to rubble. Nothing is left of the original house. The demolition crew did such a thorough job that not one brick was left of top of another.
The demolition starts the clock ticking. The crew and volunteers have until Friday to build an entirely new house on this same spot. It was fascinating to see these huge monsters picking up and loading debris into trucks:
Since the choice of the Nickless family was announced last Friday, spectators have congregated at the site. Though security is tight, the public is very much welcome to give their support. A lot of them, of course, are fans of the show.
The organizers tried their best to give everyone who signed-up to volunteer a chance to help out. Jobs range from skill-specific tasks to more general chores like packing and cleaning up. Volunteers arrive about 1 hour before their shift is scheduled to start. Some of them will work way into the night and early morning, since the construction is done 24/7. The volunteers are easy to spot; they’re the ones with the blue EH:ME shirts.
Tonight, the debris should all be cleared, the old foundation dug out and concrete for the new foundation poured.
(10-01-08 Update) Schedules: Spectators are welcome to visit the site. Shuttles will be available on Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., from the K-Mart parking lot on South Cedar St. On Friday, the shuttles will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. ‘Move the Bus’ is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Spectators are urged to get to the site hours before the 2 p.m. reveal. “Up to 6,000 people are expected” according to this LSJ article.
