Keeping the Castle

Finding a Closet Organization System

We just moved into our new home a few weeks ago and I’m still working on getting settled. This house has a pretty good amount of closets, but it’s needing some shelving and organizational materials to maximize the space.

One of my struggles is organizing the clothes in the bedroom that is shared by the two smaller children. We have future plans to turn some attic space into a fourth bedroom, but for now they’re sharing and I need to work with the space we have.

1 closet mess

I hung up all of the hanging clothes, but I still had lots of pants and other clothes to sort through. As you can see here in these pictures, I dumped them out on the bed and the floor. I needed to see what I was working with and what my needs would be.

2 closet mess

My husband was going to put in another hanging rack on the bottom of the closet , but I didn’t really like that idea. That would mean I would need more hangers and that I’d have to hang up every piece of their clothing. Then we agreed upon a shelf so that I could fold their pants and shorts and put them on the shelf. Then I got to thinking that we already had the Yaffa blocks and they would work great because they have divided sections.

3 closet mess

I ended up sorting a bunch of outfits together and putting them into two bins for my daughter. She likes to have her things sorted to where she has lots of choices. It also helps keep the morning drama to a minimum. I also folded some pants and put them on the top shelf and I have another bin for my son’s shorts. I’m still working on washing and sorting fall clothing, but it’s ok because we still have plenty of room left.

Right now I’m waiting on my hubby to hang up the canvas shoe racks on the back of the doors. I didn’t show you the mess of shoes. I’ll save that for another time. ;)

This is what I’ve been tackling. What are you tackling?

We just moved recently, too, and have been having some of the same issues, but with my and hubby’s clothes instead of the kids’. Our dresser was old and we got rid of it upon moving. We’re currently putting in a closet in our bedroom downstairs, so all our clothes are stacked in the basement, in the old drawers from the dresser we pitched. I hadn’t thought of yaffa blocks. That’s a great idea that I think would work perfectly for us. Thanks!!

My tackle this week was getting started on a quilt for a charitable cause. I’d love to have you come visit: http://www.chocolatefingerprints.net/2009/09/tackle-it-tuesday-quilt-for-cause.html

Awesome! We moved a year ago and now have half the closet space. I am now wishing we had moved the Yaffa blocks – that’s a great idea!

What a great idea for the bins and I totally agree on the hangers…I dislike having to hang everything…especially kids clothes.
