Fresh and Ready Bananas from Chiquita

Last week our local paper had a coupon for the Chiquita Fresh and Ready Bananas. These are new-on-the-market pre-packaged bananas that stay fresh longer than “traditional” bananas that are sold by the pound.
There are no preservatives in these bananas. The packaging controls the amount of air that the fruit is exposed to, thus slowing the ripening process. You then control when you want to have perfectly ripe bananas. The following scenario, common with traditional bananas, will be a thing of the past:
… if consumers buy a traditional bunch of bananas on the weekend, the bananas typically are not ripe enough to eat Sunday. Then you eat one a day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday, you are thinking the bananas are too ripe and considering tossing them out. By Friday and Saturday, …you have no bananas.
The new packaging a great idea, which we’ll probably see applied more and more to fresh produce. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see how consumers will take to the new banana. The coupon I saw was for $1 off, which made me wonder how much these bananas cost. When I got to our local supermarket, I found them for $1.99 for a package of 3 bananas. I wasn’t quite ready to pay that much. So I reached for my weekly 6-piece bunch of “open-air” bananas, instead.
Will you buy these ready-when-you-are bananas at this price?
