How to Peel and Slice a Pineapple

Somebody brought a whole pineapple into our lab once. It sat for a couple of days in the lunch room. My guess is that nobody knew what to do with it. I finally brought out the lunch room knife and, a few minutes later, presented my co-workers with delectable slices of the juicy fruit.

Here’s my version of how to peel a pineapple (and impress your family and friends as a result):

1. Hold the top end (with the leaves) in one hand. With the other hand holding the knife, slice off the bottom of the pineapple to make it nice and flat. Still holding the leaves and keeping the fruit upright, slice off the skin by segments.

2. Note that the "eyes" of the pineapple are arranged in a diagonal manner. Place the fruit on its side. Using your knife, cut out several "eyes" at a time in V-shaped slices, like this:

3. Go around the fruit until you’ve removed all that needs to be removed. You don’t have to cut too deeply to do this.

4. If you’re slicing the fruit in circles, remove the leaves last. Otherwise, for wedges, go ahead and cut off the top portion:

5. Slice the fruit in half, and then into wedges:

6. If you would like to save others from eating the hard portion, you can slice it off before serving. Some people like that part, though. I like to leave it on, since pointy wedges just look better.

7. Serve and enjoy!
