laundry peroxide.jpgBeyond the basics, truly laundry-savvy homemakers have tips and tricks up their sleeves that the uninitiated are unlikely to know. Until they’re unearthed by yours truly for your consumption.

Courtesy of Terri McGraw:

* To keep brightly colored items from fading, add a teaspoon of Epsom salts to the water during the first washing, or soak them in cold salt water before washing.

* Three tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide may be used as a bleach substitute. It can also be used to remove blood stains on clothing. Apply some peroxide to the stain, let it fizz and wash as usual. I also found out this last tip from a nurse in a hospital laboratory. My son, who had jaundice as a newborn, was pricked in the heel several times for a blood draw, poor thing. We were able to get the blood stains out with this.

* If you accidentally wash a woolen item, soak it in lukewarm water and hair conditioner (one tablespoon of hair conditioner per gallon of water). This will loosen the fibers enough to let you reshape the item.

* When washing vinyl shower curtains or vinyl tablecloths, add a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle to keep the plastic pliable.
