Shop Smartly for the School Year

It’s back-to-school season in the U.S. Homemakers are being bombarded with promotions for the latest “must-have school supplies” for both new and returning students. Shopping for the new school yearshouldn’t bust your bank account. Here are a few tips and reminders for starting the school year on the right financial foot:
* Plan ahead. – A budget has to be in place to prevent impulse buying. You’ll need a supply list from your children’s school. You’ll also need to know what supplies you already have at home.
* Shop around for the best sales. Stores will offer “loss leaders” to entice you to come in, hoping you’ll purchase other items while you’re there. Stick to your list and you’ll save money.
* Reuse some items from last year. Backpacks, rulers, and scissors don’t need new replacements every year. Wardrobes don’t need to be overhauled completely. Buy a few new items and update last year’s clothes with a few accessories and shoes.
* Buy only what your kids need. Don’t go overboard with 120 crayons for your kindergartner, even if they are on sale.
* Go generic whenever possible. Regular pencils write as well as expensive glitter ones.
* Spend for items you can use longer, like backpacks. But save money by avoiding licensed items.
* Some organizations like the Salvation Army host drives to help low-income families obtain needed school supplies. Check your local chapters to see if you qualify.
