Fruit Juice. Juice Drink. Juice Cocktail. What’s the difference? Aren’t they all the same juice?

As it turns out, these labels are not just fancy names chosen by beverage manufacturers. They also tell you what is in the product you’re buying.

If you want to get as much nutrition from your beverages as possible, you’ll want the closest thing to natural as you can get. The main thing to remember is to look for products labeled “100% juice“. Only beverages with 100% juice may be labeled as such.

All others may have as much as 99% juice or as little as 10%. They are sold under such names as juice drink, juice beverage, juice cocktail, juice punch, juice blend and sparklers. If you like these drinks, buy those that have juice as one of the first ingredients. If the first item listed is high fructose corn syrup or water, you’ll know that these are pretty much what you’ll be getting the most of. Ingredients are listed in decreasing order of quantity in any product.

More juicy details from Cooking Light (June issue).
