There are common tips for cutting food costs, such as having a budget and a menu, bringing coffee and lunch from home, having and sticking to a shopping list, and buying in bulk. In addition to these well-known hints, consider these additional ways to slash your food budget:

* Perform regular inventories of the food you already have, in your refrigerator and pantry. This prevents double purchases.

* Shop only once a week to save on gas, time and impulse buying.

* Compare and shop by unit price (costs per ounce or pound).

* Look for less expensive brands at the bottom or the very top of grocery shelves.

* Check expiration dates regularly and use those ingredients in the next day’s meals. This saves you from having to throw out expired but unused food.

* Pack left-overs in single-serve portions to take as lunch.
