All the lights and decorations that adorn our homes are very pretty and festive. But they are also potential fire hazards. With all the preparations going on, it’s easy to miss the rules for fire safety.
Here are 12 reminders that will help keep our homes safe this season:
1. Test your smoke alarm.
2. Check your Christmas lights for any frayed or split wiring. Always switch them off and unplug them when you go to bed or leave the house.
3. Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep them away from flammable materials like the Christmas tree and decorations.
4. Make a fire escape plan. Familiarize all members of your family, and any guests, with the plan.
5. Don’t overload electrical sockets by plugging in too many appliances.
6. Never leave cooking unattended.
7. If fireworks will be part of your celebrations, learn about and stick to the firework safety code in your community.
8. Completely put out candles and cigarettes before you go to bed.
9. Keep your live tree well watered and away from sources of heat like candles and fireplaces.
10. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
11. If you’re using a fireplace, keep the area around it free of debris and flammable materials like wrapping paper and throws. Protect against sparks by using glass doors or a sturdy screen.
12. If you have elderly relatives, check on them during cold spells. Remind them of these tips to promote fire safety.
