Keeping the Castle

Welcoming the Year with … Laundry!

laundry basketIt seems that, with the holidays, I also took a break from doing laundry. Part of the reason was the busy-ness of the season. Or maybe I just thought I’d take a break from it, period. The result is, as you might imagine, full-to-overflowing hampers.

I spent most of today catching up on laundry, and I’m still not done. My elders used to tell me that whatever I was doing or not doing when a new year begins is what I’ll be doing for the rest of that year. So, pantries should be full of food to ensure a bountiful year; the house should be clean; and so on.

For me, if the superstitions are true, I would be facing full hampers of laundry all year. I think that even if they were not true, I’d be doing a lot of laundry this year anyway, just like the last one.

One of my new year’s goals (I’ve stopped calling them resolutions, because I always break those) is to be more efficient at home. The laundry would be a good place to start.

What I need is a method. Should I do all the weekly laundry in one day? Or should I do one load a day? I can never decide which is more efficient. The FlyLady suggests doing a load a day, which includes not just washing, but drying and folding and putting away as well. Some people are very good at doing the whole deal in one day. So, help me out will you?

How do you do your laundry? Do you have a day set aside for taking care of everything? Which day works best for you? If you do one load a day, how do you make sure you do it to the finish (ie., putting it away).

I’ve never heard that particular superstition before. It makes you not want to lay around the house with a hang over on New Year’s Day though.
