When Old Clutter Becomes Something New

Reduce, reuse, recyle. Those are the three R’s of sustainable living. The easiest to do it seems is reduce. Simply cut back and spend less. Next is recycle. With all the resources available for what can be recycled, it’s as easy as labeling bins and tossing things in.
But, reuse? That takes much more thought and energy. How can one use old pens, for example? Or old pantyhose?
I was surprised by the ideas I found in Amanda Kwan’s article, 15 new uses for old clutter. In a nutshell, the transformations are as follows:
* Old dishes become new planters.
* Old branches become new decor.
* Old mailing tubes become a new wine rack.
* Old pens become new silverware.
* An old shower curtain becomes a new grill cover.
* Old paperwork becomes the new dog bed.
* Old binders become new CD cases.
* OId socks become new ornament savers.
* An old pantyhose becomes a new broom.
* An old book becomes a new safe.
* An old pillowcase becomes a new doggy toy.
* Old newspapers become new window washers.
* Old yarn becomes new nests.
* An old mop becomes a new curtain rod.
* Old soap becomes new moth repellant.

You can see how I made our old coffee table into a headboard for our daughter at http://southernseven.blogspot.com/2008/03/painted-desk-and-headboard.html. I love to find old things and reuse them.
