Finally, Dunkin Donuts Wholebean

I finally found some Dunkin Donuts whole bean coffee and decided to try it. I had heard both good and bad things about it and you know, it is important to make up your own mind.

So…I found it at Target last night during the bi-weekly emptying of my checking account..

Just an aside…food is outrageous! We feed 12 people here. 4 adults, 2 teen boys, 1 almost teen girl, and 5 under the age of 10. My grocery budget has doubled. Some of this is because I use a lot of organics and fair trade items, but that should be offset by the fact that I have free eggs and milk…I could not believe the expense. Thank God my garden has 18 small tomatoes (so far) the corn is up and the green beans are about to explode. :)

Anyway. Dunkin Donuts coffee….

The aroma when the bag was opened was pretty strong and coffee like. It was not particularly rich but you could definitely smell it.

The beans are small, very small, and light colored even for a regular roast. There was no oil apparent on the beans at all.

The lighter ones are the Dunkin Donuts. There were a lot of broken coffee beans and pieces in the bag. The darker coffee is Kroger’s premium store brand, to give you an idea.

We ground it and measured our usual way.

The aroma of the coffee brewing was average. I felt like I was back in my mom’s kitchen watching the pot on the stove percolate.

It tastes like ground maxwell house. I don’t care for it. It has the classic bitterness of grocery store coffee. You could probably get a cup that tasted this way at your local fast food place, or an old school diner.

I will not buy it again. The coffee in this particular bag will probably be used for something like brewing up for watering tomatoes.

I do have a suggestion for Dunkin’ Donuts, though……

Stick with what you know.

You water tomatoes with coffee??? Is this something I do not know about (must be!)?

I only water tomatoes with bad coffee..and they seem to love it. I have one plant that is a good 2 ft high with several green tomatoes on it.

  3. Yep, the bagged coffee from the DD restaurant is way better than the kind in the grocery store. I have no idea why, but it is. My brother and I have had this conversation too. I wonder why they changed it for the stores. I don’t care for Maxwell House coffee either. Yuck, yuck, yuck! I’ve been grinding my own Starbucks beans and they’re pretty good. I have a bag of Folgers whole bean vanilla I’m waiting to try. I just saw it in the cabinet again and took a big sniff. I don’t want to open it until I’m ready to use it.

My hubby went to the store this week and I asked him to pick up some vegetable plants. I just can’t handle paying those prices for produce. He planted 2 tomato plants last night and I have been saving my tea and coffee grounds, as well as left over coffee. Today, I put the grounds and left over coffee on the plants. I saved my grounds from this afternoon too. I’m hoping for some beautiful tomatoes!

If you’re looking to save money on groceries, I hope you’ll check out some of my articles at Thrifty Mommy. Today I posted “101 Helpful Thrifty Mommy Articles”. You’ll find information about saving money on groceries and how to use the grocery game. I saved $59 this week at Lowe’s Foods and $72 at CVS.

My problem with those things Karen is I try to shop only locally produced items, fair trade and organic which tends to take me out of the running for coupons and grocery ads. :(

Thanks Marye. I still haven’t seen whole beans DD at my Target, but I’m not too worried about it now.

Oh, and they didn’t have the Yogi tea variety you reviewed — sweet mexican chili, or something like that. I’ll have to look for it somewhere else.

    Amazon has it…
