Kidney Stones and Sweet Tea….

Nope, this is not a new recipes. :)

Apparently, according to doctors iced tea is one of the causes of kidney stones in people that are prone to getting them. It seems that tea contains oxalate which is a key chemical that produces kidney stones when coupled with dehydration and poor dietary habits.

I added the words in italics because it is something doctors never want to say..”Hey pal, your eating habits stink, of course you are going to be unhealthy.”

I don’t know. I will freely admit to not being a doctor. I don’t even LIKE doctors for the most part. (Sorry Cathy, I am sure the Wild Boar is different). I have spent my entire adult life staying away from them as much as possible. Sometimes I think that doctors take themselves WAY too seriously…and miss some pretty basic truths.

For example, in the article the guy they interviews drank six glasses of iced tea a day. How big were the glasses? I mean here in Texas we get BUBBA glasses which are basically quart mason jars. Did he drink six of those?

Anything we do in excess is bad for us. I would say that six glasses of tea a day was probably excessive. He was drinking it instead of water…that’s not smart. You gotta have water. I drink about 2 gallons of water a day, seriously.

So, if you are part of the ten percent of the population that is prone to kidney stones watch your sweet tea intake. And if you are not?

Here, have a Bubba glass of tea.

There are some other things you can do…but I think those things are best left for Simply Home Remedies, a little later.

That’s just common sense. We need water, we are made of it. A friend put it to me this way..You wouldn’t bathe in sodas would you(or in this case sweet tea), NO, it would make you sticky and gross. Your insides need a good bathing too. Common sense.

Absolutely Jo. I think most of our problems stem from poor judgment and bad habits!

That is just too funny…hey! wait a minute, I used to drink that much tea in a day. Maybe that’s my problem :) .

Ha! You are so funny…sadly the Wild Boar is full of Kidney Stones too! He tries to drink so much but to no avail…plus he works straight for such extended hours he forgets to drink…grrrr.

Spinach is full of oxalates too, maybe I need to cut back his leafy greens!

  11. Marye says:

Cathy…he needs to drink more beer. :)

  12. Monica says:

I’ve had 1 bout with a kidney stone… 6 years ago. OWIE!!!! I’ve never had one since, but all things pointed to it being related to Noah’s pg, not the tea I drank. (of course, try telling my mom that… @@) I’m trying to drink more water this year (and suceeding), but logic seems to dictate that if one is prone to kidney stones, you could link them to most anything! (over consumption of calcium, under consumption of calcium, ect…) Ok, rant over….

    sweet tea…. yum……

  13. Marye says:

True Monica…hey, try chasing the tea with beer ..that is supposed to help.. :D

  14. Monica says:

Can’t stand beer…. mom has me well brainwashed. She calls it ‘old dirty dishwater’…. bleh!! Now, a lovely glass of chablis, on the other hand…..
