This is TOO Much!

O.k..I have a major dislike of McDonalds and we all know it. But this…THIS is too much. I need to create an award for stories like this.
Anyway, if you have never read the Consumerist and you enjoy wry humor then perhaps you should.
It seems that Someone ordered a sweet tea sans ice at a local McDonalds and was charged 69 cents more than the advertised price because they requested no ice. So, being the easy to get along with sort, he asked that they put a single cube of ice in his sweet tea….and they said it had to be a full cup of ice or no go.
I would really like to see a youtube video of this. The article id not say where this occurred. I cannot for the life of me believe that it would have been possible for it to happen south of the Mason Dixon, and yet I can’t imagine it being called sweet tea up North.
I get cranky when they charge me extra for a cup of ice. :/ Do you KNOW that Sonic charges 89 cents for nothing but a cup of ice, even if you bring your own Bubba cup??
Don’t you miss the days of S & H Green Stamps? I mean stores gave you a little extra. A little customer appreciation.
So…what do you think? Was the Micky D’s acting in a rational manner or not?
Makes ya wonder what they would charge ya if you asked for an empty cup!

I think they would definitely charge you for an empty cup! Ugh! It makes me crazy that you can’t even get a glass of water without being charged at most places anymore… Not to mention the lack of “public” restrooms everywhere!
We very rarely go to McDonalds (maybe once a year) but after recently watching Supersize Me, I can say with confidence that it’s likely we’ll never go again! Yuck Yuck Yuck!
P.S. We do indeed have sweet tea up north. It just isn’t nearly as popular as unsweetened tea.
Carrie, it’s crazy! I swear, they are going to start charging extra for forks!
That’s crazy. I do know McDonald’s keeps inventory and prevents employees from giving away free drinks by keeping track of their cups which is why they often charge for stuff but it’s so crazy.
cathy- I think it is ridiculous!
Maybe, MAYBE if he asked for extra ice, they could charge him. But to charge him for no ice? In that case, I would order the drink with ice, fish the ice out, and throw it at the manager haha
LOL Carla…
Do you really think Micky D’s can make SWEET TEA?! I mean the Real thing?
I wouldn’t order it to begin with, but I am going to try it and see if they charge me extra here in Oregon. I’ll let you know.
LOL! Sharon, I LOVE you….you rebel you!
No I don’t. They can’t even make a decent coke.
Actually they make pretty good sweet tea. . . And that is kind of weird. . . (Yeah, both that they make decent sweet tea, AND charging for no ice) My oldest daughter works at McDonalds and they never charge extra for no ice. And usually not for cups of water either. . . Although you only get a small cup.
BUT! Their new speciality coffees are nasty. All of them.
Heather, somehow I am nto surprised about the coffee…
I wonder if it is a regional thing, or a store thing about the ice?
I can remember going to the grill at the beach when I was a kid. They would charge you for the cup if you asked for ice. 10 cents seemed like soooo much back then. I wouldn’t be surprised at being charged for a cup of ice, but I do think the price was rather high. LOL
It seems to be everywhere. I know restaurants that are charging a to-go service charge to cover the cost of the to-go containers.
Having had a tea room I understand this but it seems to me that customer service is sadly lacking. Surely it can;t ALWAYS be about the money?
Absolutley they charge for the empty cup. It costs them more than the drink they put in it. Ice is also a fairly expensive commodity in it’s own way. Those machines are expensive and break down frequently. Don’t hate me because I used to work there, please!
LOL Ruth! Never. I understand ..as I said I used to own a tearoom, however, my argument is that there is a point of customer service that I think they are missing. It can’t be ALL about the money.
