It costs them more than the drink they put in it. Ice is also a fairly expensive commodity in it's own way. Those machines are expensive and break down frequently. I know restaurants that are charging a to-go service charge to cover the cost of the to-go containers. They would charge you for the cup if you asked for ice. 10 cents seemed like soooo much back then. I wouldn't be surprised at being charged for a cup of ice, but I do think the price was rather high. And that is kind of weird. . . (Yeah, both that they make decent sweet tea, AND charging for no ice) My oldest daughter works at McDonalds and they never charge extra for no ice.
