Be Thankful For Trees

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to honor trees for all the products they provide us. You can find wood components in ice cream, salad dressing, shampoo, and toothpaste, just to name a few products. According to research by Rita Hassert, of the Morton Arboretum’s Sterling Morton Library, wood chemicals can also be found in cosmetics, photographic films, food additives, and fillers for many types of plastics.

Wow! I didn’t know wood was used in so many of our products! There are even wood components in our clothes from shirts, ties, to dresses, and suits.
Of course I do know that wood pulp makes paper products such as toilet tissue, envelopes, boxes, paper towels, napkins, newspapers and facial tissue, and one of my favorites, books.
Trees also give us some great food, from nuts to apples, and pears, yum! So what would we do without trees? That’s a scary thought.
I’m glad places like The Morton Arboretum are leaders in tree science and education, and work to save and plant trees. The 1,700-acre outdoor museum features magnificent collections of 4,117 kinds of trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the world. They share their wonderful knowledge with people like you and me so we can more fully understand and conserve our precious tree resource.
