This month the Lifstyles network is reflecting on 4th Of July
’s of the past. I can’t think of Independence Day without remembering the saying for corn, it should be knee high by the 4th of July. These days most of the corn around here is usually much taller than knee high by the 4th.
Some fields got a late start this year with all the rain we’ve had recently. My sweet corn will probably only be about mid-calf high by the end of next week.
I’m thankful I have corn to measure on the 4th, some farmers in the mid-west won’t be measuring much of their corn crop thanks to the devastating floods this year.
How’s your corn crop doing this year, will it be knee high by the Fourth of July?

Down here in the “Deep South” corn is knee high by the 4th of June or earlier. My corn is over 6′ tall and has tassels and silks already, and I consider my garden as a “Late” garden by most standards. I noticed a sign in a neighbor’s yard last week that said they had corn for sale.
I’m currently picking squash, hot peppers, tomatoes, zuccini, okra, cucumbers, and digging potatoes. Within the next week I should be picking peas (peas in my neck of the woods usually means purple hull peas).
I enjoy reading Mother Earth’s News and just felt that I needed to brag a bit about my garden.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks William! I’m jealous, I love corn fresh from the garden, but mine probably won’t be ready until mid August.
I have several green tomatoes, but they usually won’t ripen until the nights stay warm in July, and my green beans won’t be ready for a couple weeks.
Stop by and brag about your garden anytime you want. I love to hear what’s going on in reader’s gardens.
