Put Your Houseplants On a Schedule

Many people tell me they have a hard time keeping houseplants alive. I love houseplants, so I usually have several in my house. One of my favorite tricks to keeping my houseplants alive is to keep them on a regular schedule for watering, and attention.

I water (or at least check) my houseplants once a week. My watering day is Tuesday, but you can make it any day of the week that works for you. When you’re first starting out write it on your calendar, or in your planner, until you can get it in your weekly schedule. I have certain things I do certain days of the week, so it’s easy for me to remember.
I water my plants well, enough to soak the soil, but not to have them standing in water. I usually check them first, if the soil isn’t dry I pass them by. While I’m watering I also check the leaves for any signs of pests or problems.
My plants do great with this plan all winter long. During the heat of summer I usually give them an extra check toward the end of the week. Sometimes the summer heat can suck out the extra moisture.
