Mother Earth's Garden

The Benefits of Houseplants

I really enjoy houseplants, especially in the winter when it’s cold outside and my garden is under snow. Houseplants can have several benefits. I touched on some of the reasons to have houseplants the other day, but I wanted to go into them a little more.

If your on the fence about having houseplants of your own, here are a few reasons why you should give them a try.

    • They can cheer you up in the winter when you’re feeling blue. Plants that bloom in mid January and February are wonderful for that mid winter ache for summer. Force some bulbs, or bring in some of your annuals in pots and they’ll still give you a couple cheery blooms in a sunny window even in January.
    • Plants can help the air quality in your house. When everything is all closed up during the winter houseplants are busy working on taking carbon dioxide, and some of the toxins out of the air we breathe. Some plants are better than others at cleaning the air, here is a list of some of the best air cleaning plants. I’m excited that I have several of these in my home.

My favorite part is the soothing feeling I get when I’m watching geraniums, or hibiscus bloom in January.
