Watering Tip

Any time you water a plant, especially one in a container, pouring directly onto the soil can expose roots and keep water from spreading evenly through the soil. If you’ve had this problem, then instead of pouring water directly on the soil, try pouring it onto broken terra cotta pieces. I use a chunk of a broken coffee mug, and you can also use a medium size river stone. Any thing with a smooth, fairly even surface. Also water from all sides, and avoid water right next to the base of the plant. This will help keep the soil even on top, and encourage the roots to grow outward!

I am always collecting pretty stones and never thought of using them in this way! Good idea and the plant would look nice as well.
The funny part is she told me to break the mug so she could use it in this way. I gladly volunteered.
It’s not everyday that my wife tells me to break something… intentionally. hmmmm
I have never heard of that tip before. What a great idea!
I am determined before I die to grow something that does not die. It’s not really lack of knowing how, but really a time issue. Although I could probably walk away from the computer from time to time and go spend some time in the yard. It would do me some good!
Even I have issues with getting away from “life” to work in my garden. This morning for example, I intended to go over to my vegetable garden to work before it got too hot. Now it is almost noon and I’m still sitting at my computer desk!
Thank goodness we’ve had a respite from the heat today. Great tip about putting something on top of the soil. I mulch my potted plants and that, too, keeps the soil from being taken down from around the stems.
