HI Diane....it's quite common here in NZ to have cash bars. At parties, the hosts pay for 1 round of drinks then the guests pay for their drinks. I think it depends on what the culture is but given the tough economic environment, I am sure your friends/guests will understand if you can't pay for all their drinks :-) I mean they attended your wedding not to get munted but to celebrate your most special day, right? :-)

I'm all for cost cutting on weddings in ways such as doing as much as you can yourself, going off-season, going off-day (any day but Saturday), but I don't think that I can really advise going with a cash bar.

Some of the fallout: ticked off guests. I kind of liken it to inviting friends and family over for dinner and then asking them to pay for the wine served with their dinner...you wouldn't do that, would you?

If you can't foot the bill for drinks for the reception, then I would really look for other ways to cost cut before I would consider a cash bar.

I did ALL of those!

I also did other "tipid" things like hiring a sound system and using CDs instead of hiring live music.
