Do You Want Your Boss at Your Wedding?

This is an interesting food for thought from The Wall Street Journal and a very pertinent question. If you and your spouse-to-be are struggling to trim down the guest list, will work colleagues get the ax? My Husband and I struggled with the guest list, he’s English and I’m Filipina, we have different views on what is a ’small’ wedding. To him, having 100 guests is a huge wedding, to me in our Asian culture, 100 guests — an intimate wedding!

In my case, I did invite my boss and a few of my work colleagues who I was close to. It was a tad uncomfortable though when a couple of my work mates gave me wedding presents. Ugh! What I’d do if I had to do it over again would be to treat all my work colleagues to afternoon tea

What about you? Would you invite your work colleagues to your wedding?

Nearly every bride and groom spends some time stressing over their wedding guest list. As you’re trying to figure out whether to invite Great Aunt Betty or a friend from college you hardly talk to anymore, there’s also the big question of whether or not co-workers should make the cut.

There may be a few colleagues with whom you’re especially close, so it feels natural to want to include them in your big day, but by limiting the invitations to a select few, you risk offending those who are left out — possibly creating an uncomfortable situation in the workplace.

This can be especially true if one of the people hurt by their lack of invite is your boss, as one reader wrote recently: “My husband and I made the decision not to invite anyone from my work to our wedding… And then my boss threw me a wedding shower! Hugely uncomfortable.”

  1. It would depend on how intimate you want your wedding to be. Usually, weddings are intimate gathering shared by your family and close friends. In this case, you shouldn’t invite any co-workers unless you are friends with them outside of work. If you are inviting everyone, including people you don’t see regularly, then why not, the more the merrier, right?

  2. Molly Guler says:

It depends on the wedding and how close you are to your boss. In all I think that it can be a wonderful way to make your professional life coincide with your personal life without having to endure awkward BBQ’s.
