Handwritten or Laser Printed Wedding Invitations

I’ve always liked receiving handwritten wedding invitations. My friends and family say I have very nice handwriting style but I wouldn’t dare mess up my own wedding invites so I’ve sought the city high and low for the best and most affordable calligrapher there is and boy was she good!
What about you? Do you care how you’d address the envelopes? There is a Q&A from Wedding Ethos that I’d like to share with you:
QUESTION:
Dear Eve,
One more invitation question: My mother and friend (both calligraphers) were going to address the envelopes, then my mother found someone who prints them so that they look like calligraphy. The printer claims the printing is flat, not raised, so the envelopes don’t look machine-done. Is it tacky to have the envelopes printed, rather than addressing them by hand? I do think handwriting gives a personal touch, but this will save us some time.
Thanks,
Julia
Answer after the jump.
ANSWER:
Hi, again, Julia~
Another excellent etiquette question! Traditional wedding invitation etiquette dictates that envelopes should be handwritten, not printed via a laser printer. This applies to all wedding sizes, whether you’re having 25 or 225 guests.
However, strict etiquette is being recognized less and less every year. Weddings have changed from very strict, etiquette heavy formal affairs to being fun and often much more laid back when in comparison to days past.
So, that being said, to answer your question: if you are having a very formal wedding, then you should handwrite the envelopes. But if your wedding is more casual, or if you and your fiancée are a more casual couple overall, then save yourself the cramped hands and print the labels in a nice calligraphy font.
Good luck on your invitations, and on your wedding, and please let me know of any additional questions.
Happy Planning!
