Our One Heart

I want to get married again!

Don’t be shocked by this admission. I love weddings. If I can get married every month, I will. It’s so nice to wear a lovely gown and be made up and generally fussed about. Have I told you how much I love weddings?

Fortunately for Hubby, I may want to get married again but I want to get married to the same person! Ha!

Because the Hubby swore he won’t get married again, I have to content myself with dreaming. Perhaps for our 10th year, I can convince him to do a Renewal of Wedding Vows ceremony with me…and of course a big partttyyyyyy! :-)

To those planning a renewal of vows, these are the things you need to think about:

Sample Vows for Renewal of Vows Ceremony

A couple can end their vows with a poem, for example, this verse by James Weldon Johnson:

“The world, for me, and all the world can hold is circled in your arms,
for me there lies within the lights and shadows of your eyes the only beauty that is never old.”

Vow Renewal Sample Vows :

A minister may state the following “Declaration of Intent” before the couple takes the standard wedding vows:

“When you first joined hands and hearts 40 years ago, you did not know where life would take you. You promised to love, honor and cherish one another through all things. Life has surely brought you both wonderful blessings and difficult tribulations. Therefore, you have fulfilled your promise. And God is smiling! So, as you come here today to reaffirm your wedding vows and as you reflect back over all the years as husband and wife, do you now reaffirm the vows you took 40 years ago? If so, repeat after me. (Insert personal vows)

Who hosts?

Many couples host their own renewals, and some have their children do the honors. Here’s a trend we really like: The couple’s closest friends, perhaps the original Maid of Honor and Best Man, host the event. And don’t feel like you have to find a secular event hall or outdoor space to hold the ceremony — many traditional halls of worship make wonderful, meaningful venues. Since a vow renewal is not a legally binding ceremony, you can have whomever you want to officiate — a clergyperson, a close friend, a relative, or even your children.

  1. Weddings are a lot of work and require a lot of planning. Of course, I was very thrifty with my wedding. I was very young when I got married and if I had it to do all over again, there were several things I would have done differently. Maybe someday we can have a vow renewal. It probably wouldn’t be as fancy as a wedding though. I’m much more simplistic now. I think a backyard event/celebration would suit me more.

  2. Hi Karen — to be honest, I just want to party! So your suggestion of a backyard celebration appeals to me but yeah, I’m keen on having a renewal of vows or somethin’ :-)
