$100 Laptops for Children Worldwide

At the UN World Summit on Information Society, Secretary-General Kofi Annan told reporters they will be distributing $100 laptops to children worldwide.

A cheap laptop boasting wireless network access and a hand-crank to provide electricity are expected to start shipping in February or March to help extend technology to school-aged children worldwide.

Reader dragonfly1867 once told me about The Hole-in-the-Wall project that sets up computer learning stations in outdoor playgrounds. They found that kids were quick to learn collaboratively, and fully utilize the learning station. These $100 laptops should go far in improving the future lives of children today.
