A few ideas from Tree Hugging Family

So, I mentioned awhile back that, as a family, we’re trying to think and act a bit more eco-friendly in our home. We’ve made some big strides in composting and recycling, and a bit better in just buying less stuff (never a bad thing, I think!). The kids love helping to figure out what can and can’t go in the compost bowl, and trips to the recycling bin are coveted “helper” roles for all the kids—even the 2 year old! Very fun.

A b5media blog that I’ve been enjoying recently is Tree Hugging Family written by Jennifer Chait. In her blog, she shares tons of ideas on getting the kids involved in helping take care of, and have an appreciation for, the environment. Here are a few that I liked:

Kisses for the link love! Also; I love the picture; did you take it? Either way, it’s just great. I love that the recycling trips are the wanted tasks at your home — very nice. My son likes the reuse part best he’s always making “contraptions” out of toilet paper rolls and old jars. Not that they work but it’s good science.

Now, do I have to say how I’m working on the boy’s other eco-ways or will the blog cover it ;)

  2. Grrrr! I didn’t take the photo (flickr-credit at the bottom of the post), but I was so bummed b/c as soon as I read your question, I was like, “AAAAHHH! I have a photo very similar to that sitting in iPhoto!!!!” :( Ah well. Totally forgot I’d taken some back in October. Anyway, kisses back at ya. ;) I’m really enjoying THF. I do get tired of the kids always wanting to get the paper towel rolls, though. I now have to cut them in thirds so they can all share! :D

My two year old loves to put stuff on the compost pile. She loves to help me in the garden, and at the Community Supported Agriculture farm we support. She will grow up know the origins of most of our food.

We donate non-recyclable clean plastic containers (like for take-out) the the art dept of our local children’s museum.

And – drum roll indeed! – we plan to go down to one car this winter, and ride bikes whenever possible.
