Battle of the Smithsonian Review

We went to see Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian yesterday. I’m a huge fan of the original Night at the Museum, but I didn’t know what to expect from the sequel. My son loved the film, and I think it was definitely geared to the younger crowd.

Since we last saw Larry he left his night guard position with the museum to start his own invention company to sell on infomercials. The products he invented all came from his night watchman job, a giant dog bone, un-losable keys, and a glow in the dark flashlight. He pedals his new inventions on infomercials. I’m really not giving away any of the movie, you find out all of this in the first 5 minutes you’re watching.

My least favorite part of the movie was the scene where he quarreled with the other night guard. I didn’t get that at all, they seemed to stretch it out forever. The length of the scene may have made more sense if the other guard played a more major part in the film and showed up again at some point. And where were all those night guards when all the animals and characters came to life later? They made quite a mess and a ruckus, but no one showed up to see what was going on.

My favorite part of the film was when the Air and Space Mueseum came to life. That was pretty cool to watch. My son said that was his favorite part too. His other favorite part was when they went into the pictures. The tablet made pictures come to life (kind of like Harry Potter), and the characters could leap into the painting (kind of like Blue from Blues Clues skidooing into pictures).

Overall I thought it was a fun family friendly movie. I’m sure we’ll see it again when it comes out on DVD if my son has anything to say about it.
