My dear friend, Mary Emma Allen, writes Alzheimer’s Notes – a blog for Alzheimer’s caregivers. Yesterday, she shared a few books for children about Alzheimer’s and a little about how to help children learn more about the neurodegenerative disease.
She says:
Some people try to shield children from the fact that a family member has Alzheimer’s, while others have grandparents living in their home. I discovered that my grandchildren accepted my mother’s condition and have fond memories of visiting her in a nursing home.
How have you talked to your children about serious illnesses especially if family members are affected?

I’ve talked to my teenagers about Alzheimers although they’ve never had contact with any one with Alzheimers. I wanted them to understand that it’s not a joke. I don’t know much but I thought important for them to understand that you can’t get a person back by correcting what they say. I suppose acceptance is what I was trying to get over to them.
Anji: Thanks for the comment! Teenagers are a tough nut to crack but I hope because we talk to our kids, they’ll be more compassionate in the longterm if not the short.
