Chocolate Advent Calendar

advent-calendar.jpgAfter spending a few years of our youth in Germany (thanks to the Air Force), it became a tradition in our family for each of the kids to receive a chocolate advent calendar. I have memories of my mom bringing the calendars into the house the last week of November, and excitedly awaiting the first day of December so that we could eat the first chocolate!

I really did think that we would cease to receive the calendars once we started jr. high, or certainly by the time we were walking the halls of the high school. But no, oh no. Mom continued to buy them for us well into college, and um, well…we still get them. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that my kids love them. The oldest has received them each Christmas so far, and it’s now a tradition that she loves and appreciates! So, I think mom is stuck buying these for a few more years decades, at least.

The best part, though, is when you forget about them for a few days and then you have, like, 3 to open at once! Yum…..

  1. I didn’t really quite get advent calendars until this year. Didn’t know if we were supposed to start at 1 or 25 or ??? Now I know to start at 1 and we’ve been enjoying our combined Christmas and New Year’s advent calendar. Definitely a fun way to countdown and helps the kids understand exactly how many more days until Christmas. I am getting real tired of talking about how many more days until Christmas.

Most kids probably won’t need to count down to Christmas when they stop believing in Santa because the excitement vanishes when they know they can always go out and buy the presents any day and the mystery has been solved.

  3. Hsien: Okay, so has S started asking yet how many days til next Christmas? I think Bald Man’s already told Jake “365″ at least once! :D

Saw this too late for last years Christmas but will have to keep in mind for this years. What a neat idea!

    Hello,
Does anyone know what the symbol is in the number 7 of this year’s PeA Traditional Schokolade advent calendar (with Santa on the front)?
It looks like salt and pepper shakers with snowballs next to them. Any suggestions are helpful! Thank you.

  6. Julie Garrett says:

We would love to know what number 7 is on the calendar – it’s driving us crazy. Our guesses are salt and pepper shakers, bowling balls and pins and snowmen/snowballs.
