Crocs and Rubber Clogs Not Safe on Escalators

Kerri and I have written before about the rubber Crocs clogs and their imitators before (she likes them, I’m not completely sold). Today, I found out that the daughter of one of my blog friends, Jo, was wearing imitation Crocs when they got stuck in an escalator in Singapore earlier this month.
On Saturday, two-year-old Chong Shiyr’s right big toe was ripped off in a Singapore mall after her rubber clog — an imitation of a Croc shoe — got stuck between the escalator gap and the side wall.
Her toe was found nearly three hours later but could not be reattached as it was too badly damaged.
Crocs public relations manager Tia Mattson emphasized the safety of Crocs shoes while reminding everyone of the dangers of escalators and moving sidewalks.

How sad! How did it get stuck? Those things seem pretty durable.
How horrible! I’ve heard that you’re supposed to be aware of where the emergency stop buttons are on all escalators.
According to most reports, shoes/slippers that are made of flexible rubber are more likely to get caught in the gears of an escalator… not at the top or bottom but at the side.
So parents out there… please be aware that the sides of a moving escalator are dangerous and you don’t want your kid’s shoes anywhere near them!
My girl’s entire shoe went in the side and disappeared together with her big toe and a sizeable portion of the sole of her foot. It was shocking and heartwrenching to say the least.

Michelle: It really was one of those split second things that happen. Honestly, when you’re panicking, you don’t always remember everything you’re supposed to!
I’m kinda kicking myself now for not taking pics of the escalator or record the specific timings of events… but I was way too messed up to think straight!
Kailani: no idea how it happened… still wondering. My guess is that we’ll never really know.

Jo: Thanks for sharing more here. I really can’t fathom the experience. I like the Crocs, but can easily see how they could get stuck. They are very pliable. But, ugh, I just cringe and ache everytime I think of what you and your daughter must have gone through. Will continue to keep you in prayer. And maybe I’ll be a little more paranoid from now on!
I can hardly stand to think about this. In fact, I just can’t. I’ll sit here at my desk at work and cry until tomorrow.
I did watch an escalator in Dubai unrobe a little girl in a very pretty party dress. Luckily, she didn’t get hurt. Just down to her skivvies.
Christina: Shiyr’s fine now. I’m sure she will grow up just fine despite not having a toe.
when crocs.com first introduced the prima model to the world we were impressed and immidiatly ordered six pairs - for our kids and friends from USA
we liked what we got but we all experienced the same annoying problem , the shoe kept slipping off our feet
three months ago we we came across the solution
when we started to decorate the shoes like we do with other models .
the shoe now, is not only beautifull but it doesn’t slip off the foot.
in about two weeks we will post quality pictures of these improved models.

I met a girl last week that is 17 and she is missing a toe. I asked her what happened and she said when she was 7 years old an escalator took her toe off.
