Fish Tycoon

Children love animals and think they can take care of a pet. The reality is, mom and dad are usually the ones who have to deal with clean-up and care. Virtual pets are a good substitute and Fish Tycoon (free to try, $19.95 to buy) fits the bill for aquarium enthusiasts.

Jinny Gudmundsen of USA Today has a review:

The game challenges players to interbreed different species of tropical fish in hopes of genetically recreating the seven Magical Fish of the Island of Isola, a place where the most rare and exotic fish used to live.

Parents might not want to play this simulation with very young children because fish do die and will need to be thrown away. But for kids old enough to handle the death of fish, Fish Tycoon is a fascinating way to tinker with genetics and learn about pet responsibility.

Maybe I should suggest this to my dad. My mom is always the one who ends up taking care of his aquarium for him.

I love the beauty of a tank of fish, but I don’t like having to clean them all the time. Also, I love the vivid colors of the salt-water fish, and I have absolutely no patience to fiddle with saline concentrations, so I’ve never owned a salt-water tank. Made me pretty happy to find Serene Screen a few years ago. Not that I use it much. And when we were at the computer store the other evening, I noticed a couple of the displays had some other aquarium program running, with big gorgeous goldfish swimming about. :)

Best thing about virtual fish? The child who thinks her fish haven’t had a bath and need bubbles, won’t be able to kill off her whole tank in one fell swoop.

Deb: Rearing fish is tricky business. As for the little girl and her bubbles…I must give her a talking to next time. ;)
