Fun with Food Coloring

Green Tea Party? How about pink pancakes? A mountain of blue mashed potatoes?
Okay, that last one may gross some of you out, but kids LOVE stuff like that! My kids, anyway.
We were still suffering a bit of cabin fever the other day, and my daughter was desperate to use her play teapot for a teaparty, but with water or something really in it. After making sure that the pot would hold liquid, and washing it out, I put in a drop of green food coloring, and filled the rest of the little pot with water. She and her brother loved their “green tea”. After that pot, they had some orange tea, and then purple tea. I think my kids drank more water that day than in quite a while!
We’ve also celebrated Valentine’s Day with pink pancakes (just a few drops of food coloring in the batter), and I’m looking forward to green yogurt smoothies for St. Patrick’s day.
The original idea came from a memory of my mom putting food coloring in my mashed potatoes to try to get me to eat them. I don’t think it ever did work on me.
How about you? Do you use food coloring to brighten up a kid’s day?

I miss all the fun stuff.
Hmmm….maybe I should have warned you….in case you’re monitoring potty time.
My dad used to add food coloring to our homemade waffles every Sunday morning. It was a big deal to get to choose the color. Now he has continued it with my kids – they know that if they go to the Grandparent’s over night, that Grandad will make colored waffles and they fight over who gets to pick the color. Fun!
We do tea parties quite a bit with herb tea – as long as it has no caffeine, it’s fine. We use food color often – for home made Play Dough…to put in the toilet on St. Patricks Day – (The Leprechauns did it) and to color home made whipped cream!
Char: What a fun tradition that gets passed down to your kids! I might have to try that one of these days.
MC Milker: Yes, of course Play Dough! I knew I forgot to mention something in the post. The toliet on St. Patrick’s Day cracked me up!
