Heelys: Children’s Shoes with Wheels

November 16, 2005 by Lei

Heelys or roller shoes first became popular a few years ago. I remember seeing kids skating around the basement floor of a shopping mall in Singapore and being delighted by the invention, but scared for their safety. Kids as young as six- or seven-years-old wear these shoes; half walking, half skidding helter-skelter everywhere.

And it’s not just their safety I’m concerned about. How do these shoes affect the development of children’s feet if they wear roller shoes too often? When and if my son becomes interested in these shoes, I don’t think I’ll allow him to skate on them anywhere except for parks and other recreational areas.

Oh, please… My son wears his all over. He looks like half tazmanian devil, half ballet dancer!!! Just keep your kid from scaring old ladies at wal-mart and you’re good to go!

By the way, my husband has a pair and nearly fractured his wrist (and pride) the first week he had them. Maybe it isn’t the children we should be worried about????

  3. amy: lol If you have a video of either your son or your husband gliding around on Heelys, send it to me. I’d love to feature it! :)
