Make and Play Toy Farm Sets

When I was growing up I was a total farm girl (tom boy). I loved growing up on the farm, and I loved animals (especially horses). I used to beg for farm sets, or horses when we went to the store. Sometimes I came home with a new one to add to my collection. I would spend hours setting up farms on the floor, outside in the dirt, or on a large piece of board my parents gave me.

After I set up my little farm towns I would spend hours in my make believe world moving the animals and the people around. I love to see that kids (and adults) still create those farm towns today.

The other day I showed you some of the Lego creations at our local county fair. Today I have some of my favorite farm towns. I’ve been trying to talk my son into creating our own farm farm since I saw these the other day. I’m not having much luck. I think if I told him we could add in some Star Wars ships, Lego creations, or a Transformer or two he might be on board.

Many of the farm sets incorporated real grains, dried flowers, dirt, and stones, just like the farms I set up when I was a kid. Maybe I’ll have to make my own for next year. I think it would be a ton of fun.

What Will Be The Hot Toy This Christmas?

July 29, 2009 by Linette Gerlach

I know, it’s only July, why am I talking about Christmas already? Because I’m sure all the toy manufacturers out there are definitely thinking ahead and working hard to make sure they have the “next big thing” this Christmas. The toy that everyone is waiting in line for. That toy that everyone wants, and the manufacturer (errr, Santa)  just can’t make enough of.

What do you think it will be? Will it be one of the toys from last year, back for an encore performance? Will it be one of the toys introduced at this years Toy Fair? Maybe the new Rubik’s Touch Cube, or the Barbie B-Nails, or maybe it will be Mattel’s new Mind Flex Game?

What about Kota the Dinosaur, or the latest Baby Alive? Or maybe it will be the new Lego Rockband, I know that one’s on my son’s wish list.

Hmmmm, what do you think the must have hottest toys for Christmas 2009 will be?

Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen 4 Kids?

My son and I went to see “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” on Thursday. I would say it’s definitely not a movie for the little ones, and holds up to it’s PG-13 rating. Even though the movie is PG-13 and clearly for an older audience I can see it being marketed to kids, with the latest Transformers toys and costumes.transformers-revenge-of-the-fallen

Would I recommend the movie? I would recommend the latest Transformers movie to adults, and older children. It was an action packed movie, and I love the Transformer battles and special effects. I think in the end I enjoyed the first movie a little more. Of course I’ve watched the first one about twenty times, so the second movie may grow on me after I’ve watched it a couple more times.

My son thought “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” rawked! His words, not mine. He’s a kid, so he loves it when things explode, transformers transform, and there’s tons of action going on all over the place. He was ready to get in line and watch it again. I’m sure he’ll make sure we have the DVD when it comes out.

Wet and Wild Outdoor Summer Fun

April 24, 2009 by Linette Gerlach

It’s not quite summer yet, but it’s going to be 80` here today and tomorrow, so I sure am thinking about those warm summer days ahead. Those days when you need a little water in the mix to cool yourself off. So I went on a mission to find some fun water entertainment ideas.

I didn’t have to look far, SwimWays® has several backyard and water toys that will help keep your kids cool this summer.

The Splunk a Dunk game lets your kids use the backyard hose to make a fun toss game. Kids take turns tossing bean bags at a target, but watch out! If they hit the target everyone gets wet.

Another toy that looks fun for the pool is Water Girlz™ Fairy Tails™, cute little fairies with wings that flutter. Each Fairy Tails doll comes with her very own seahorse friend and seashell comb. Each figure can be posed in many positions and is perfect to stretch little imaginations during pool time.

Get a neighborhood basketball game going in the pool, or just throw a few practice shots from your poolside recliner with SwimWays® Spring Jam Basketball.

The Disney Fairies have transformed Pixie Hollow into a Spring wonderland with beautiful blooms and Fairy greens. They’ve waved their magic wands and ushered in the new season in a big way.

They’re celebrating the new Tinker Bell movie coming out this fall, Tink and the Lost Treasure, you can view the trailer for the new movie at the Disney Fairies website. The movie is set for a fall release to Disney DVD.

To celebrate Tinker Bell’s new movie Disney is releasing new Fairy toys and clothing. Here are a few of my favorites from the new line.

First up some Tinker Bell Fairy gear, a couple fun t-shirts, a backpack, and a new line of Tink bags can be found at many major retailers.

tinker-bell-fairies-gearI love the new fairy dresses. These would be so fun for a little girl’s fairy party, or to play dress-up with friends. Each dress in the collection represents one of the magical characters in the film.

Curious George Preschool Games

I Can Do That! Is launching a new line of Curious George preschool games. The games premiered at the New York Toy Fair in February. The games are based on the Emmy® Award winning children’s television show on PBS KIDS®, these games provide preschoolers fun news ways to engage with everybody’s favorite monkey.

We had a good time testing out the games on Saturday. My son’s favorite was the Curious George Hide and Seek Zoo™ Game.

Curious George Hide and Seek Zoo™ Game

Curious George Hide and Seek Zoo™ Game

We had a blast spinning the wheel, and pressing the walkie talkie button to see what George’s next “job” was. Once in a while when you press the walkie talkie an alarm sounds, and you hear “the animals have escaped!” and everyone but the person who pressed the button has to put on animal masks and go hide!

It was warm outside, so we set boundaries to hide in the back yard. We have quite a few trees, and a couple barns to hide behind.

Curious George Super Helper™ Game

We also played the Curious George Super Helper™ Game. Be a neighborhood Super Helper just like Curious George! Volunteer at the firehouse, pitch in at the restaurant, or help tidy up at home. First, flip over three cards to see who needs help. Then drop the bouncy ball, flippy coin, or dice cube into the tower and watch it magically come out on different sides. Make a match to keep your cards. The player who helps the most wins the game. Game prize stickers add to the fun!

Curious George Discovery Beach

Curious George Discovery Beach

Curious George Discovery Beach™, lets you flip a card to reveal your challenge. Then search for sea creatures and colorful treasures hidden below five secret beach locations. Try to find a match. Watch out for those waves! If the game spinner lands on a wave, shake the box and the treasures will slide and hide in new locations. Find the most treasures to win!

I Can Do That! Games will also be introducing three new Dr. Seuss-themed games for your little Dr. Seuss fans.

The games provide hours of fun family entertainment through a range of fun activities—from active play, to discovery, to memory skills, and helping others. One of the new games, Curious George Discovery Beach™, has already won a prestigious Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold award.

All of the Curious George games are available at Target, and Target.com. Visit the I Can Do That! website for more information on the games.

The New Rubik’s Touch

March 8, 2009 by Linette Gerlach

Rubiks TouchCube I was a big fan of the original Rubik’s Cube® when I was growing up. I was even fairly fast at solving it. I’m very rusty at it now, and my nephew stomped me on speed when we raced a few weeks ago.

Rubik’s premiered the new Rubik’s Touch Cube® last month at the New York Toy Fair.

Rubik's TouchCube with Hand

The Rubik’s Touch Cube® is the first completely electronic solvable Cube.

From Techno Source:

“We’ve been working on Rubik’s TouchCube for the last three years—with engineering teams on two different continents—and are really excited to share it with the world,” says Eric Levin, president, Techno Source. “Rubik’s TouchCube is the ‘dream cube’ for anyone who’s into high-tech gadgets—it combines today’s most current technologies with the iconic Rubik’s Cube.”

The original Rubik’s Cube®, is the number one best-selling game ever, so the Touch Cube has some huge shoes to fill. Instead of turning the new cube, you swipe it with your finger, but if you get nostalgic for the original you can set the sound so it sounds like you’re twisting and pretend you’re working the original.

The new Rubik’s Touch has a built in solver if you get stumped, or you can request a hint to get over a tough spot. You won’t have to worry about accidently changing a square while you’re holding the cube, the Rubik’s TouchCube’s motion-detecting “accelerometer” only recognizes moves made on the top side of the Cube. A player’s fingers won’t move the lights on other sides while they’re just holding it.

I can’t wait to give it a try.

Rubik’s TouchCube, will be in stores in the fall of 2009 and is appropriate for children ages 8 and up. It will retail for under $149.99. For more information, visit Rubikstouchcube.com.
