Injuries Caused By TV’s

A few years ago, an earthquake in Taiwan caused a TV to fall off its stand, crushing a toddler and killing him. In Canada, at least five Manitoba children a year are injured by TV’s and sound systems falling off of unstable furniture.
The stories are harrowing: A boy’s legs are pinned under a 30-inch TV after he closes a drawer on a wall unit and the set topples. A girl dancing to the Mary Poppins soundtrack accidentally yanks down a speaker and it crashes onto her head. A child’s foot is struck by a falling TV after she scrambles up a dresser to turn the set on.
This is why I do not allow my son to touch the TV screen. Small children especially like to place their palms on the TV and stare at it as if they could jump inside. But, kids are not always able to control their own strength. It could be one finger touch today and whole body tackle the next.
Sometimes danger comes from the most unexpected places. No matter how secure you think your TV and sound system are, take the extra step to make sure they really are.
