Kenana Knit Toys From Kenya

Rarely do stuffed animals or dolls catch my attention but this Kenana “The Most Beautiful Mermaid” has captured my heart. The story behind Kenana toys makes it an even more worthwhile buy. Other toys include an elephant, teddy bear, and wart hog.
Kenana toys are created by Kenyan farm women in the village of Njoro. One group hand-spins wool from local sheep on old bicycle wheels; another colors it with natural plant dyes; and a third hand knits these unique toys.

In addition to generating salaries for its employees, all Kenana’s profits generate additional benefits for Kenana employees–literacy programs, eye exams and eyeglasses, health facilities and better equipment.
