LEGO Racers

Whenever we get a new toy, my son is obsessed with the packaging. He studies all the pictures and tries to set up his toy, especially if it’s a construction-type toy, exactly like what’s on the box. So this bit of news about misleading LEGO advertising definitely rang a bell for me because I can imagine the headache parents go through when their children ask why their LEGO Racers can’t do all the stunts.
The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) says that though the LEGO ads show some little hands-on operation, most of the toys are performing stunts “without any sort of special set-up. CARU believes that this gives the impression that the Racers perform stunts with ease and simply when placed on the ground by a child.”
What CARU wants LEGO to do is “feature adequate amounts of product play and clearly distinguish these from footage using special production techniques. Additionally, any future advertising should include clear demonstration of method of operation for the toys.”
Maybe this is a good opportunity to teach our kids about false advertising.
