National Geographic Kids Magazine

Have you been over to the National Geographic Kids website? How fun! I just learned about a bird that “flies” underwater to gather aquatic insects to feed its family. And the coolest part? There was a video of it! Too, too cool.
I’d headed over there because my super cool awesome former nanny friend bought my daughter a subscription to the National Geographic Kids magazine for her birthday, and we just received the first issue yesterday. What a fun magazine! In this first issue we’re already finding great photos, fun joke pages (you know kids love a good joke!), features on animal rescue shelters, and a chart to help you pick the perfect pet (my daughter was really excited about that!). The last page included a Mad Libs type activity, and also featured some original drawings from their readers.
I remember receiving the magazine Highlights for Children from my godmother when I was a kid. We would be so excited to receive our own mail and our own magazine. The stories and puzzles and games were so fun, and it was a gift that was new every month! My daughter seems as excited as I used to be for this gift. And now, when she asks (as she does every day), “Is there any mail for me?”, I can answer her, at least once a month, “Yep, honey, just for you.”
Do your kids have a favorite magazine or activity book?

let me know when the one for jake finally shows up. becuz if you don’t get it soon i need to make some phone calls.
I’ll have to check out their website.
Jack: Will do. Thanks again, super cool awesome former nanny friend.
Karen: I had a blast. I have yet to show it to the kids.
I got Boys Life for a while as a kid… and Sports Illustrated for a couple years… and of course I had subscriptions to a few different comic books and role playing games over the years.
That’s a great one–I’d recommend Zoobooks too, my boys especially loved that one. I linked to your personalized book list post from a while back today, I thought that was a good idea.
Bald Man: I think my brother got Boys’ Life as well. He liked it. May be in our future.
Michelle: Never heard of Zoobooks, I’ll have to check them out. Thanks for the link on the other post.
Thank you for this suggestion, Kerri. I’ll be sure to check it out. I just had a little peek, and it looks extremely entertaining.
Any surfing I can do with Bethy on my lap is fine with me!
My son gets Classic Toy Trains and USA Hockey, my daughter gets American Girl magazine and USA Gymnastics, but she would love NGK – she loves to watch the National Geographic Channel.
I used to LOVE Highlights!!!
Over here in the UK, we love all the BBC children’s magazines.
My kids love all the UK kids magazines (like Barbie, etc) because they all come with those toys.
Hey Rory: You’re welcome.
I need to head back over with one of the kids. A few of the videos were loading slowly, but I think that had more to do with all the junk on my computer than their site. Enjoy!
Char: Good suggestions! Might have to look at some of those as the kids get older. I know you guys love your dolls; is the American Girl magazine really good? I’ve thought about it for my daughter, but haven’t seen a copy, yet.
Hsien: Cool. We’ll have to check some out!
I used to read Highlights all the time as a kid. I’m kind of looking forward to the kids getting into that stage.
I also LOVED National Geographic, but that was way before they had a kids version.
Our kids are starting to fake read books, so it won’t be long until magazines become popular.
Hey Mike: It’s fun now that the oldest, and even the 3 year old, are starting to get into these things. Makes the loss of babyhood easier to bear.
HI,
I am mother of two young boys, who have been wating desperately for their first subscribed magazine. I am sure it will be fun and more reading time. Thanks a million to a friend who told me about this free lego magazine.
