Play Library

Overdone Toys

Little People friend Doll- Sonya Lee with Bonus DVDSherry Wolkoff of The Philadelphia Enquirer has written a funny diatribe about children’s toys.

I do remember buying talking dolls for my daughters (I might even have had one myself), but now it’s hard to find a doll that doesn’t talk, laugh, cry, sing, make faces, or recite the Gettysburg Address.

But the doll I found myself admiring wasn’t just a doll. It was a stimulating and educational doll system.

Doll system? Exactly what a doll system is eludes me, but it was packaged with enough equipment (dishes, bottles, high chairs, strollers, furniture and the like) to see it through menopause.

To be honest, the situation is much worse in Asia. Cheap toys from China are always noisier and covered with flashing lights. Walk into any shopping mall in Singapore and you’ll find people selling “educational” electronic toys. And not only are toys in Japan packaged with the usual indstrial strength twist ties and stiff plastic trays, the store clerks will wrap it in another layer of paper before letting you take it home.

But I suppose all of that is doubly irritating when you’re going through menopause. ;)
