Pink Princess Room

Okay, so let me start this with a little story. *insert wavy sitcom dream sequence visual effect* About 5 years ago, I was with a group of moms when the subject of kids’ rooms came up. Specifically, decorating kids’ rooms.
I very distinctly remember one mom saying that she had been in a house at one time, and was appalled (yes, she actually sounded appalled) that a mom had painted a room red for her child. She said something to the effect of, “I would never paint a room red for my kid.” And I just remember saying, “Why not? It’s just paint. You can always paint over it later.” I’ve also recently heard of parents who refuse to paint a room for their kids any color that they hate. The children are free to accent in their room with
that color, but no paint.
I don’t really get the resistance to it. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up partly in military housing and we just didn’t paint very often, or because the room I spent the majority of my childhood in was primarily wood paneling, but I just get so excited over a newly painted room! And, I think, it’s a very simple way to allow a kid to personalize his/her space, and to let them feel very pampered, without a ton of cost or effort.
Okay, so, fast forward to today. My least favorite color is pink. I do not like pink. At all. Ever. So, what is my daughter’s favorite color? Yep, you guessed it, the princessiest, frilliest, pinkiest pink that you can find. That’s her most favorite color, ever!
Yep, there is now a pink room in my home. Painting her room and adding the princess bedding and such was her main Christmas gift from her grandma, Bald Man and me. Her grandma happens to love love love pink (maybe why I don’t?
), and was so excited for the change. And not only is it pink, it is three shades of pink (one below the chair rail, a lighter shade above it, and the faintest shade of pink with sparkles in it on the ceiling—-man, it’s a girly-girl room!!!).
And you know what? I love it, too. Not because I suddenly had a change of heart and now like that rosey hue. Nope. It’s because I loved the look on my daughter’s face when she woke up in her pink room on Christmas morning. And I love the look on her face everytime she talks about how much she loves her pink room!
Yep, I can live with a pink room for a few years. After all, it’s only paint, and can be painted over when she outgrows it, or moves out.
Now her brother wants an orange Tigger room, complete with black stripes. That one might be a bit more tricky.
What about you? Are you good with a little paint and self-expression? Got any ideas for me with the Tigger stripes?

This room looks great! My youngest would love a princess room and I’ll have to show her this. Now if you are scared of pink, check out the wild color scheme in my middle daughter’s room:

Char: Thanks. It was really fun to do! I tried check out your link, but it’s not working for me.
Kerri – the link in my comment is correct – not sure what happened on the trackback one.
I can’t wait to see the tigger room.
The tool room for Luke in my dream looked pretty good. You should think about it.
The room looks fab! Tell your bald painter he did a great job.
I think a Tigger room is totally do-able. You can paint it a soft shade of orange and do tiger stripes for the edges (what do they call that?).
Jack: I think Luke would love a tool room! Bob the Builder and all.
Hsien: Thanks! That Bald Man is handy to have around.
I think we’ll go bold orange if we do a Tigger room. Hmmm…except it might be too bright for the boys to sleep. Maybe black with orange stripes? ha
Kerri – my apologies – I had inadvertently marked the post as private. The link should work now.

There it is! What a fun room. I love the cubby shelves, in addition to all the pretty colors.
Thanks for sharing!
What a cute room! I love it Kerri! I am a huge fan of pink.
The princess most be very happy!
You know how much I love pink! I wish I could paint my room this color! I don’t think DH would be too crazy about it, though!
Thanks for sharing this with the Carnival of Family Life.
It looks like a very cute, and girly room. I don’t understand why parents would refuse to paint a room a certain color for their child, especially under the pretense that they hate the color. Your child is an individual and if they love a color that you don’t, what’s the big deal.
Here via the carnival of family life.
Very cute room. I see you have Bald Man hard at work.
Annie: I know you are! The princess is quite pleased with her room. Can’t wait til you can get over here to see it!
Local Girl: Yeah, I don’t know too many guys that would want to wake up to this room every morning! Okay, I don’t know ANY guys who would!!
Erica: Thanks for the mention!
Lisa: Thanks! She does love it, and it makes her happy. It’s more than worth it!
Karen: Thanks.
And yes I do, as it should be, right?

Hello, I love your pink room. Can you tell me the shades you used. I am in the process of finding pink shades for my 4 years old daughter.
Hey gang,
You should check out http://www.kidztheme.com.au
Looks they usually produce fine art murals for theme park etc…
but they also do domestic rooms.
Just thought some of you might be interested in what’s out there regarding a professional finish.
I had my daughters room done, you really save lots of time, maybe not the cheapest approach, but the finish is just amazing.
Not your typical themed room.
My little princess is always finding something new in the art applied.
Hiya, pleeeeeease can you tell me what shade/no pink that is on the top part of that wall? Have been trying to find a nice pink for my little girl for ages, lots of them seem grey or dull

I can’t remember the actual name of the paint color. But I do remember that it was one of the Disney colors available at Home Depot. Hope that helps!
