Podcasts for Children and Parents

Maybe I’m the last person on earth who doesn’t have an MP3 player. Even my parents have them! I haven’t really gotten into the whole podcast thing until recently but so many great podcasts have popped up lately that I think I’d be missing out if I don’t start listening to them.

I’ve previously written about Storynory where Natasha reads aloud classic children’s stories. My son is starting to enjoy these kinds of recordings (more about a new favorite another time) so there’s another motivation to get an MP3 player. Not too hard to convince me, is it? :D

Another fun podcast is at Just One More Book!! Three times a week (how do they find the time?!), Andrea and Mark go to their favorite coffeeshop to talk about their family’s favorite children’s books. The best part of it is that they highlight books that most of us have probably never heard of (at least I haven’t) and interview artists and authors. Each podcast is charming with a warm, intimate, yet fun feel to it. I’ll be listening regularly even if I have to borrow my husband’s PSP to do it.

What’s your family’s favorite podcast?

Thank you so much for the kind words. We’re glad you like our show.

We have a built-in player for each episode on our website (press the > play button), and you can download directly to your computer and listen at your convenience.

As the band Uncle Seth sings… “You Don’t Need an iPod”. :)

    Thanks, again!
    Andrea

  2. Andrea: Thanks for clarifying. I was listening at my laptop, but I really wanted to be on the move. Go go go!! ;)

I don’t need an iPod but I want a Creative MP3 player! Thanks for giving me another reason to indulge myself.

I’m the Director of an English school in Tokyo and we make a podcast for Japanese parents and children learning English. (It’s the #2 Kids and Family podcast in iTunes Japan right now) It’s intended primarily for a Japanese audience, but it’s done in Japanese and English so if you’re interested in learning a little Japanese you can use with young children, you can check it out at http://www.kodomoeikaiwa.podomatic.com.

Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child has a GREAT podcast of children’s music the family can enjoy together: http://www.sparetherock.com/

Land of Nod has a couple of great podcasts featuring Justin Roberts and Dan Zanes: http://www.landofnod.com/blog/podcast_subscribe.aspx

I also recommend a site called http://www.bookbox.com. It’s not a podcast, but they have many animated children’s stories in various languages which you can download for your iPod video. It’s not free, but you can get a free episode at Google Video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6167610385491042409&q=bookbox

  4. Devon: Thanks for dropping by and sharing your favorites! Obviously, you have an MP3 player. POO. ;)

BTW, I lived in Nagoya for five years (99-04) so I’ll be dropping by your blog to reminisce.

I’ve been reading your blog for quite a while now. Long time listener, first-time caller :-)

  6. Devon: So then you know how nuts Kerri and I really are. hehee

  7. Here’s the post I did on podcasts. Being an uber geek, I consume many ;)

  1. [...] This podcast, in their own words … “about the children’s books we love and why we love them – recorded in our favourite coffee shop.”  I’ve just discovered this (via the Play Library), loved it and subscribed.  [...]
