Product Recall: Playskool Team Talkin’ Tool Bench

My impression of most product recalls of toys seems to be that they occur before anyone is injured or dies. So it’s especially frightening to read that the Playskool Team Talkin’ Tool Bench may be involved in the suffocation deaths of two children.

Hasbro discovered these incidents from a reference on Amazon.com and from a report made to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Washington Post reports that one of the deaths occurred when the 2-year-old ran and fell on one of the plastic nails.

Alan Korn, director of public policy for the nonprofit group National Safe Kids:

For the most part, toys in this country are wildly safe, so when there’s been a death with a toy involving choking and then a second death, it should be a concern to parents, the government and the company. Just because a toy is compliant with federal regulations does not mean it is necessarily safe for the marketplace.

The CPSC recommends removing the two toy nails and contacting Playskool at (800) 509-9554 (24 hours) to receive a $50 certificate.

  1. How horrible! It reminds me of the McDonald’s Pokemon balls that were suffocating kids (suction).

You can’t prevent every death, but I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for these parents to go on. They probably feel guilty for not realizing it could happen (tho, who in the world would have thought this could happen?) and angry at the makers for not preventing it (but again, who would have thought this could happen?).

    This is heartbreaking.

  2. Robyn: Life is so unpredictable and harsh. :(

  3. Thanks for sharing the recall news. 99% of any battle is exposure. ;o) Thanks for commenting on my blog today too! As a mom of two I’ll be back for more.

  6. Wayne: Glad to be of help! No worries about this fun-looking toy. Just get rid of those two plastic nails and all should be well.

DO you know the names of these children? A friend of mine jsut emailed me the recall report. My son went to the hospital for 4 days and had to stay in ICU for a day and a half on a breathing machine because his throat was so swollen. It was from a different product (the little tikes swirlin saw dust workbench) He was holding the red nail and tripped and it went in his mouth. The round part first..It would not come out. I am looking for the names of the parents or any websites where I might be able to get in touch with them. This was a horrible situation and I cant imagine how those parents feel. My son lived thank god! but i had no idea about these recalls!
