Product Recall: Reebok Heart-Shaped Charm Bracelets

March 24, 2006 by Lei

Just a few days after swallowing the heart off a free charm bracelet that came with a pair of Reebok shoes, 4-year-old Jarnell Brown was dead. The heart charm was pure lead and the level of lead in Jarnell’s blood was three times higher than what is considered dangerous.

Better safe than sorry. Get rid of any cheap trinkets and costume jewelry within children’s reach.

Reebok Heart-Shaped Charm Bracelets RECALLED

Hazard: The recalled jewelry contains high levels of lead, posing a risk of lead poisoning and adverse health effects to young children.

Description: The recall involves an 8-inch long metal bracelet with a heart-shaped charm. The name “Reebok” is engraved on the one side of the charm. The charm bracelet was provided as a free gift with the purchase of various styles of children’s footwear.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the charm bracelets away from children and dispose of the entire bracelet.

For more information, see the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

    :O Those poor parents! OMG!

Who would have thought something distributed with Reebok would be a problem? This sort of news is scary stuff to hear as a parent. :/

  2. Lei says:

Deb: I agree! This was not one of those run-of-the-mill product recalls.

  3. Christina says:

That is frightening! What on earth was Reebok thinking???

  4. Lei says:

Christina: They probably didn’t think people would be handing the bracelets to their kids to play with. Most of these cheap, junkie jewelry is made in China where quality assurance is very low priority.
