Safest Sunscreen for Children

The b5media Science and Health Channel is having a theme day featuring the sun and I thought I’d jump in on the action. At this time of year (and, really, at any time of year), we should take care with our children’s skin and use a quality sunscreen when they’re out in the sun.
Pedatric dermatologist, Patricia Treadwell, recommends a chemical-free sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
There’s no evidence chemical sunscreens are dangerous or toxic, but we just don’t know enough yet about how young children react to the ingredients. Also, sunblocks with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide start protecting as soon as you put them on, whereas chemical products need to be slathered on 30 minutes in advance so the skin has time to absorb them.
The one pictured above is made by California Baby and is a frangrance-free sunscreen that can be used by children and adults alike.

I wish there had been children’s sunscreens when our girls were little, but there weren’t. We really didn’t realize at the time just how dangerous those early sunburns were going to be in the future. I’m glad to see that my daughter has been very careful to see to it that our grandchildren always use sunscreen.
I’d like to invite you to join our brand new, family friendly BLOG VILLAGE TopList. I think your blog would be a great addition.
You can find out more about it at http://blogvillage.dirtybutter.com .
I am going out looking for that. We have a hard time getting our Southern side of the family to take sunscreen seriously because they have darker hair and skin than the kids and I. Still, none of us, regardless of how much pigment we have, are naturally equipped to deal with the rays our damaged ozone sends our way.
So, I slather up not only my own kids, but the nieces and nephews every chance I get. Luckily, they just see me as the eccentric foreign relative.
Dirty Butter: So nice to see you here! Thanks for the invite. I’ve already joined and I’ll tell the rest of the bloggers in the b5media Family and Relationships Channel too.
Kate: Thank goodness for eccentric foreign relatives!
Glad to have you as our newest member of BLOG VILLAGE, and by all means, send as many folks our way as you can. I saw a need, and I’m trying hard to fill it. Our TopList is all the better for having your wonderful blog in it!! Keep up the good work.
Wow! I was excited about that sunscreen until I saw how expensive it is. I’ll have to look for another brand of non-chemical sunscreen!
Mom: Oh poop. I didn’t know California Baby was so expensive. Like you, I thought it sounded nice but since I don’t need to buy any yet, I didn’t bother looking at the price.
