Solving The Rubik’s Cube

Have you ever been able to solve a Rubik’s Cube? I’m embarrassed to say I never have.

First available in 1980, it has since sold in the hundreds of millions and was a pivotal plot point in Will Smith’s latest movie The Pursuit of Happyness based in my favorite city, San Francisco!

Here’s Tyson Mao on Anderson Cooper 360. He was the first person to solve the Rubik’s Cube in less than two minutes while blindfolded. He was also the “Rubik’s Cube consultant” who coached Will Smith on how to solve the Cube.

Wonder if I’d be able to solve the Cube this time with the help of Tyson’s tutorial. Can you and/or your kids solve the Rubik’s Cube? How about when blindfolded?

NB: More on the Rubik’s Cube revival.

  1. [...] I’ve yet to see the new Will Smith movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, but I understand that the Rubik’s Cube has a big part in that movie. Maybe that’s where the sudden new wave of interest is coming from? I will check that out as soon as it comes out on video. According to Play Library, Tyson Mao was the first person to solve the Rubik’s Cube in less than two minutes while blindfolded. He was also the “Rubik’s Cube consultant” who coached Will Smith on how to solve the Cube. Here is Tyson Mao’s online tutorial for solving the cube, which you can download as a PDF or as a Word DOC. On Play Library, you can also see a video of Tyson Mao as a guest on CNN making an attempt at solving while blindfolded. It’s amazing how fast and effortless he does it. [...]

  2. [...] Rubik’s Cubes are hot this year but I wonder…. If I’ve never been able to solve one before, is there even a remote possibility that I could solve a Rubik’s Revolution? [...]
