National Family Game Night

The other day I talked about our family having a weekly family game night, usually on Fridays, today I want to tell you about National Family Game Night coming up on September 23rd. Hasbro is challenging families to turn off their TV’s and play a game together as a family on the 23rd.

I know schedules are hectic, both children and parents are busy, but why not devote one night to getting “unplugged” and enjoying each others company over a game? If you can’t do it on the 23rd set aside a day and hold everyone in the family to making that date.

National Family Game Night comes right in the middle of Turn Off TV Week, so it’s the perfect time to spend a little time reconnecting as a family.

Here’s another New York Toy Show video for you. Check out this Clone Wars Turbo Tank. One of many Star Wars Clone Wars toys from Hasbro featured at the 2009 Toy Fair.

Check out the removable command center, and all the compartments you can hide your favorite Star Wars action figures in. The tank is compatible with both Clone Wars and Star Wars Legacy action figures.

Pretty Pretty Princess Cinderella Edition Dress Up Game – Perfect for Your Little Princess

When my daughter passed the potty training milestone several months ago, her aunt gave her a present – the Pretty Pretty Princess Cinderella Edition Dress Up Game. My daughter was about 3 1/2 years old when she received this present, and she’s been enjoying it more and more each week since she got it.

The game is meant for children ages 4 and up, but since it requires no reading and simple counting which an adult or another player can help with, 3-year olds can enjoy it too. In fact, I modify the rules a bit to make it simpler for my kids.

As you can imagine, this is game is every little princess’ dream come true. Players spin the spinner and work their way around the board collecting jewelry. The winner is the player who collects his or her ring, necklace, earrings, bracelet and the crown first.

It’s so much fun for the kids to put their jewelry on and act like princesses. I highly recommend this game for girls from pre-school through elementary age, but heck, I like to play it, too!

Honeybee Hop – So Much Fun

I love the Honeybee Hop by Playskool. Well, I suppose the music gets a bit annoying, but aside from that, I think this toy is great.

First, it’s easy to set up. Even my 3-year old triplets can pull it out at any time, press the button on top and get it started. I love toys that they can use all by themselves!

Second, they can practice their coordination with this toy without hurting themselves. I got this toy as a gift for my daughter for Christmas, and she immediately loved it. She tries so hard to jump over the motorized arm. She can’t do it yet, but she keeps trying!

Third, it’s an indoor toy that promotes activity which is nice on very hot (or cold) days.

I think it’s a bit pricey for what you get at $24.95, but I still love what the toy does, so I give it a thumbs up.

Star Wars Stormtrooper Action Figure, Not for Play

My son loves Star Wars stormtroopers. I’m not sure what the appeal is, but he loves them. Today, he picked out a Star Wars Stormtrooper action figure at Target (it also came with a Star Wars coin), and it’s feet fell off within an hour of play. Not only that but the gun is affixed to the Stormtrooper’s hand with a rubber band. Suffice it to say, once the rubber band comes off, it’s nearly impossible to get the Stormtrooper to hold the gun again.

The packaging says this toy is for children ages 4 and up. My son is just about 4, but this toy is definitely not good for kids that young. I think a more appropriate age would be 8 and up. Young children are too rough on this toy, which falls apart too easily.

Keep in mind, Star Wars action figures from Hasbro come in more character forms than just Stormtroopers, so be careful before you buy these for your young children else they may end up disappointed like my son did.

Cranium’s Hullabaloo – Fun for Kids of All Ages

Cranium’s Hullabaloo is an action-oriented game for kids ages 4 and up. What I love most about this game is there is virtually no set up, and kids can play it with little or no supervision. My 3-year old triplets love this game, and after I showed them how to use it the first time, they understood how to play and could play without my help.

The game is simple and includes a few variations. The simplest game play mode involves spreading the colored game pads around the floor then flipping the switch and turning the game unit on. Music plays and a voice tells players to move or jump or hop, etc. to a specific colored game mat or a mat with a specific type of picture on it (for example, a musical instrument or a food). Kids move from mat to mat until the music stops. The voice announces the winning mat and whoever is standing on that mat is declared the winner. The winner is then instructed to do a dance or another fun activity before the game automatically starts again.

We received this game as a gift, and it’s been very popular with my kids. I highly recommend it. The $24.99 price tag shouldn’t turn you off. It’s actually worth it.

Another Easy Bake Oven Recall

When I got the heads-up from Karen about an Easy Bake Oven recall, I remembered that Hsien had reported one back earlier in the year. It seems that the issues that were causing concern in February have not yet been properly addressed, and now I’ve seen them use the word amputation. Yep, definitely worth bringing up again.

R2KT: The Pink Droid

Okay, so, if you’ve known me for more than…say….5 minutes or so, you’ll know that I am not a lover of pink. Really. At all. However, I make exceptions for pink when it really matters. This is one of those days (yes, they are far a few between).

This story comes via Playthings.com. A story of a pink droid, somehow related to the beloved R2D2, created to honor the life of a little girl named Katie. This droid’s name is R2KT. I love it.

Just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con this week, Hasbro and Lucasfilm have created a limited-edition Star Wars action figure to honor Katie Johnson, a 7-year-old Star Wars fan who died from brain cancer in 2005.

The new figure, R2-KT, resembles a pink and white version of R2-D2 and will retail for $9.99 at Hasbro’s booth and the StarWarsShop. A small inventory will also be offered for sale online through HasbroToyShop.com and StarWarsShop.com following Comic-Con. All proceeds will go directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundations of San Diego and South Carolina.
