A couple weeks ago I talked about preventing summer brain drain. I mentioned a workbook series called “Summer Bridge Activities.” Several friends and local schools have recommended the Summer Bridges program, so I was really excited when they sent me a review copy to take a look at.

Can You Stop Summer Brain Drain?

Did you know kids lose a month or two of what they learned the previous school year through the summer? When they return to school in the fall, many have forgotten some of what they learned the year before. According to studies, brain drain affects math skills the most, but other subjects can fall victim to brain drain.
How can you help your child keep what they’ve learned through the long summer months?
Participate in the summer reading program at your local library. Challenge your children to read all summer long, and have fun with the summer reading activities your library offers.

A Great Summer Learning Website~ Starfall

I have a couple favorite learning websites for kids, and Starfall is at the top of the list. It’s a great website for preschoolers through first or second grade, depending on the level of the child.
Starfall starts at step one, teaching children the alphabet, and goes through helping children read easy stories on their own.
If your child is ending the year a little behind where they should be in reading, or you just want to give them a little extra practice over the summer (while they’re having fun), check out Starfall.
