Plush Rocker Toy Recall by Tek Nek Toys

Tek Nek Toys recalled 122,000 of its plush rocker toys last week. It seems the base of the rocker can tip too far forward or backward leading to dangerous falls. You can read the full toy recall information in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission press release.

The toy comes in the version pictured above (a brown pony) as well as a pink pony, a pink unicorn, a deluxe pony, a deluxe bull, a penguin, a propeller plane and a Clifford the Big Red Dog. You can see pictures of all the versions of the plush rocker in the toy recall announcement.

Will the toy recalls be effective?

With the recent recalls of many of our favorite toys still causing a stir, I’m beginning to wonder how effective these recalls will actually prove to be. Obviously, I’m not the only one. An article by E. Marla Felcher points to a major issue, I believe:

The reason so many toys were recalled this summer is not that there weren’t enough regulations. It’s that toy makers were ignoring the regulations that are already on the books.

Over 9 Million Toys Recalled by Mattel

And I thought the recall coming in a week and a half ago was huge at about 700,000 toys. Now NBC is reporting that over 9 million toys are being recalled. The toys are made by Mattel in China and the concerns, as before, are lead paint and small magnetic parts.

One of the doctors featured in the piece recommends testing any child for lead exposure who has played with any of these toys for a month or more. They say that there is a simple blood test that can be ordered by your child’s pediatrician if need be.

Toy Recall: Fisher-Price Products

There is a massive toy recall on Fisher Price products due to the discovery of unsafe levels of toxic lead paint. Many of the toys feature our kids’ favorite characters such as Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street characters. The following are a few articles containing more information:

Another Easy Bake Oven Recall

When I got the heads-up from Karen about an Easy Bake Oven recall, I remembered that Hsien had reported one back earlier in the year. It seems that the issues that were causing concern in February have not yet been properly addressed, and now I’ve seen them use the word amputation. Yep, definitely worth bringing up again.

Toy Recall: Thomas and Friends Wooden Toys

There are currently a couple of recalls out concerning the popular Thomas and Friends wooden toys. One article indicates that the cause is lead paint used in the the toys, while another article points out the possibility of small pegs or other small pieces being dislodged from the toys. Either way, it’s probably a good idea to check your toy boxes to make sure that you’re clear of these toys!

Update: Here is more specific information from the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on the toys involved in the recall. Thanks to my SIL.
